Chapter Seven

NINA

It’s six-thirty pm and I stand nervously outside the front door of Logan Bancroft’s home wondering for the thousand time what it is that he needed to tell me in person that he could not have told me over the phone.

I’d asked, but Logan insisted I come to his house with the promise of a gourmet meal and a chance to meet Ben. No way was I going to turn that down.

Although the mystery of who Ben was and how he had come into Logan’s life had been solved, the child was still unknown to me. Never having met the innocent cause of the misunderstanding between Logan and myself was an itch I needed to scratch, and that trumped not knowing what Logan wanted to discuss with me.

What does one wear when being introduced to the four-year-old son of the man who I lo…no, I’m not in love with Logan Bancroft! After cycling through dress pants, a flowing skirt, jeans, I settled on my favorite jumper which shows off my figure but looks casual when paired with my favorite white sneakers. My hair’s in a casual ponytail and I’ve got only the bare minimum makeup on.

I ring the doorbell and it’s a short wait before the door swings open wide to reveal Logan, a warm smile on his face that looks just as natural as the scowl he usually wears. That smile puts me at ease with its superpower.

“Hey, Nina,” Logan said, stepping aside to let me in. “Thanks for coming over. Ben’s been excited all day.”

“Me too,” I confess as I follow Logan into the living room. Unlike the night when I came over to celebrate our victory at the race track, toys are scattered across the floor, and colorful drawings are on the coffee table.

That’s when I catch a glimpse of a little boy peeking out from behind the couch, big brown his eyes wide with curiosity.

“Ben,” Logan calls, “come say hello to my friend, Nina.”

I watch in rapt attention as the little boy emerges, his sandy hair tousled, and his superhero cape slightly askew. He’s staring at me as if sizing me up. This is not Logan’s biological son, but Ben has enough of his uncle’s likeness to avoid doubt about Logan’s claim as daddy.

“Hi,” the little boy’s voice is a mix of shyness and excitement.

I couch down to his level. “Hey, Ben. I’m Nina. It’s nice to meet you.”

Ben’s eyes widened further. “You’re pretty,” he declares as if it were the highest compliment he could bestow.

I laugh and look over at Logan to find him trying to stifle a chuckle. “Thanks, Ben. I think you’re pretty awesome too.”

“Who’s hungry?” Logan asks.

“Me! Me!” Ben jumps up with genuine enthusiasm.

Logan leads us to the dining table, where a spread of spaghetti, sausage, garlic bread, and colorful fruit awaits. “Gourmet?” I smirk with good humor

“Uh, yeah, Sorry about that. I kinda lost a little bet with Ben and this is what he wanted.”

Ben climbs into his booster seat,
